The Purbeck Dragonfly Project

2022 - 2024

An exciting new initiative!

THE DORSET DRAGONFLY GROUP is now working closely with fellow enthusiasts, new volunteers, charities and experts to develop an ambitious new recording and outreach project for the Isle of Purbeck.

The Project launches officially in 2022, but discussions and planning are well underway. A small team has been out this summer plotting heathland ponds and local enthusiasts are already getting in touch!

The Project is inspired by the creation of the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve. This designation presents an exciting opportunity for strategic, landscape-scale recording of dragonflies and damselflies across this new and nationally important ‘Super Reserve’.

Every sighting will be a vital ‘pixel’ revealing a picture of Dragonfly population dynamics across Purbeck's many habitats.

Our Project’s aims:

  • Chart the population dynamics of common & endangered species
  • Guide habitat management
  • Train & mentor next-generation volunteers
  • Deliver an inclusive outreach community programme

Want to get involved?
